by Ryan Triffitt Eighteen weeks of training later, the Gator Trail 50k finally happened. It felt like it would never come. Great synergy to this race as during the first week of the training cycle, D and I had the chance to scope out the trails at Lake Waccamaw State Park. That run was during a Thanksgiving visit to her parents, and, now, in March, it was time to cash in on those eighteen weeks. I withdrew them in full running a better race than I believed I could. Ever since I researched this race, my “A” goal, which I [MORE]

by Danielle Triffitt I may not have talked much about today’s Gator Trail 50k, but I sure have been thinking a lot about it over the past few months. After last May’s DNF at Pineland, I really really wanted to get the 50k monkey off my back, so to speak, and when Ryan suggested the Gator Trail many months ago, it seemed like a great plan. A chance for redemption. A bit of a vacation. A chance to visit my parents and get a race in. What’s not to love? Of course, then reality hit, and I didn’t quite get [MORE]

by Christopher McDougall, originally published in the New York Times March 18, 2011 Last November, I was on my way to the New York City marathon when I got word that my father had two clots on his brain and needed emergency surgery. My family urged me to go ahead and run anyway. It was to have been my first marathon since I gave up running years ago, and my first high-profile race since writing my book “Born to Run.’’ I had trained to run it barefoot, and even announced my plans to the world in an article in The [MORE]

by Ian Parlin In my 4th consecutive week of snowshoe racing I returned to home turf for the second installment of the Bradbury Mountain Snowshoe Series: Bradbury White Out. After helping Ryan mark the course on Saturday I went out and ran the whole thing, partly to check up on the marking but mostly to think through my race strategy. I wanted to remind myself how it felt to run up the Terrace Trail which makes up most of the first mile of this race, and to figure out just how fast I could go down the South Ridge.
by Ian Parlin The Exeter Snowshoe Hullabaloo is exactly what a snowshoe race should be like. No snowmobile trails, no groomed ski trails, just sweet single track packed by a handful of snowshoers before the race. Since I’m new to the snowshoe racing scene I didn’t know what to expect from this race, turns out that no one really did since this was it’s first year, but I was surprised to see such a big field of almost 100 runners show up. With the number of runners and the fact that I knew nothing about the course, except that is [MORE]

by Ian Parlin This was my second consecutive weekend of a Saturday long run on snowmobile trails followed by a snowshoe race on Sunday. This combination seemed to work OK for me last weekend (i.e. didn’t kill me) so I thought I’d try it again. This week’s race was the Hebron Hills Snowshoe Classic put on by our friends at acidotic Racing. I didn’t really know what to expect for attendance at this race because this was it’s first year, but since it was an acidotic event I knew there would be at least a few strong runners.
I was wearing my Inov-8 Oroc 280′s today, which I’ve been doing most of my winter running in so far this year. At some point I may get around to doing a real review of the shoe, but here are a few key things I’ve noticed: Same upper construction as the X-talon 212 (my favorite shoe). The combination of the sparsely lugged outsole and relatively thin midsole means you can actually feel some of the lugs when your foot hits the ground. This is not a good thing when the lug also has a steel stud embedded in it and [MORE]

As of this posting, I’ve run with it close to two dozen times and have gained a bit more insight since I last wrote an initial impressions review several weeks ago. I’ve been getting quite a few requests to do a more in depth review and I’m happy to share my thoughts, so here they are: Running with Garmins – A Brief History Several years ago I owned the uber-blocky Foreunner 201 that was a bit like running with a TV remote control strapped to your [MORE]
